About This Blog
Social media thrive in a world dominated by citizen-published, virally-distributed, unregulated material – which seems like a bit of a rogue environment. That can be intimidating when you’re used to the structure of 30-second spots, above-the-fold placements, and press releases. That’s precisely why I’m writing this blog.
My posts will be an effort to break down social media to show that they have more in common with traditional media than meets the eye. By highlighting the similarities, I hope to strip away a layer or two of uncertainty so that social media become more accessible to businesses and organizations.
About Me
I’m not a regular Facebook user, don’t have a smart phone, have never used Twitter, and can’t lay claim to a single blog post. In short, I’m a social media neophite. So what’s a gal like me doing in a place like this?
I’m enrolled in a graduate-level certificate program through the UNC-CH School of Journalism and Mass Communication (my alma mater), and one of the requirements of my current course is creating and maintaining a blog. I’ll be posting class assignments and research results here, and have to admit that it’s pretty scary to think that my ‘homework’ will be available for the whole world to critique. But getting out of my comfort zone should open up some fantastic learning opportunities.
